It rained here in Southside Virginia just about daily from my arrival on January 10th through the 17th. The ground is so saturated. The sun has shined brightly here since Friday. The temps have ranged from 40's to 70's during my visit. Typical Southside VA weather - runs the gamut.
Snow was predicted to start Thursday evening which prompted lots of closures. Closures before the first flake hit the ground. Mom had a doctor's appointment scheduled on Friday but the office called Thursday afternoon to tell her that they would be closed that day due to the winter storm. Mind you, not a single flake had fallen yet.
It did snow just as predicted - big sloppy wet flakes. The snow was sometimes mixed with rain and sometimes mixed with sleet.
When I got to the hotel Thursday night, I turned around and snapped this photo before going inside. The wet flakes were coming down.
Friday morning, the sun was shining for the first time since my arrival. Bright snow-melting sunshine. The remnants of the white stuff were slushy and frozen in spots. Most of the snow was gone by noon.
One fellow on the news Friday night said that he and his children had been so excited about the snow and were planning to go snow-sledding but they ended up sledding in the grass.
Southside Virginia - where the snow melts by noon!
When I left the hotel Friday morning, this was my view of the Dan River. My hotel sits atop a hill on Riverside Drive and the river was up so high that it was plainly visible between the businesses located across the street. The water was rushing along.
This next picture shows the Dan River as I crossed one of the bridges in Danville. The river is high! You can plainly see why the mighty Dan River earned its nickname - the Muddy Dan.
Daddy had his first cardiology appointment Friday and everyone continues to marvel at how well he's doing. I credit his walking. He has walked 2-3 miles six days per week for many many years. I'm sure this has tremendously helped his collateral circulation. That and, of course, being a non- smoker. He starts cardiac rehab this coming week and will hopefully be back to his walking routine soon. It will be a while before he can drive again due to Virginia state law and that's going to be toughbut again a small inconvenience.
The next post will tell of my Saturday visit to South Boston and Clarksville, VA to visit lots of talented people.
Sunday, I'll head back to Ohio. It will be so hard to leave Mom and Daddy. Wish I could pack them in the car and take them back with me!
